About UC Wiffle ball

The Club

One of the club's founders, Sam Ficke, played Wiffle Ball with his friends from high school in a home made Wiffle Ball field for years, and when he came to the University of Cincinnati in 2013, he met the other co-founder, Keegan Rottgen, in their learning community. Keegan played baseball in high school, and also had a passion for Wiffle Ball. After playing pick up games on campus for a year, the two boys decided it was time to make things official, and the University of Cincinnati Wiffle Ball Club was founded in 2014.

History of Wiffle Ball

The traditional Wiffle Ball rules include two players per team. This game was played on a field with about a 45 degree angle between the two "foul lines." Depending on how far the player hit the ball would determine a single/double/triple/home run.

Due to the slow play, and limited number of players, we play with a more Baseball-like approach. In the "new rules" of wiffle ball, we run bases, field ground balls, and record outs just like in baseball. The game is played with bases 60 feet from home and a pitcher's mound 42.5 feet from home. The home run fence is typically 90-105 feet from home. Wiffle is played with five players in the field at a time. Teams usually choose to field a "baseball infield." That is a pitcher, first baseman, second baseman, shortstop, and third baseman. There is no catcher.

League Rules

Play will follow all standard baseball rules unless mentioned below.

BATTING
  1. Every live ball begins with the pitcher pitching the ball to the opposing batter.
  2. The PVC strike zone determines whether the pitch is a strike or a ball.
  3. The pitch is considered a strike if the ball comes in contact with any part of the strike zone (the stand is not considered part of the strike zone).
  4. In order for the batter to "walk," the pitcher must throw FIVE balls.
  5. If the batter is hit by a pitch, it is not an automatic walk-two balls will be added to the count.
  6. If the ball hits the ground before coming in contact with the batter, or if the batter is hit in the shoe, the ball is dead and only one ball is added to the count.
  7. In order for the batter to strike out, the pitcher must throw THREE strikes..
  8. It is impossible to strike out on a foul ball.
  9. NO BUNTING. If bunt is attempted, the pitch is considered a strike.

RUNNING
  1. There are NO lead offs while on base.
  2. The ball must be hit before you may leave the base.

FIELDING
  1. PEGS ARE NOT ALLOWED, however, since there is no catcher, if a player is between THIRD BASE AND HOME (the player leaves third base), the fielding player may "peg" him with the ball to record an out. Any attempt made at a player between third base and home will immediately be called a dead ball, and runners are awarded the base that they are running to at the time of the throw.
  2. In order for you to get player or runner out, you must field the ball and either tag a player with the ball or throw the ball to the base in which a force out is in effect.
  3. "Pitcher's Poison" is not in effect.
